Sagres League: Benfica beats FC Porto ( video)

Benfica won yesterday's at "Luz", FC Porto's 1-0, with a goal by Saviola, at 14th matchday of Portuguse football League , but his coach, Jorge Jesus, began to win it in the "bank" to his opponent J. Ferreira.

Benfica was superior to FC Porto, starting by the approach to the game, in the way it managed to take game's initiative and lend depth to their offensive game, unlike Portists, wich were unable to extend their game to the red's area.

To this end, Jorge Jesus surprised by putting Urreta in starting team in order to play with two medium-wings wide open on the wings (Ramires at the right and Urreta on the left) that prevented from one of Porto's side to be leaned on Saviola for marking him.

In doing so, Benfica's coach forced J. Ferreira to retreat Fernando to dial Saviola, by the danger he represented and that the game's course has confirmed: the Argentine was a "keystone" in this game - and not only for the goal.

With Fernando very close to the centrals Rolando and Bruno Alves, and with two "pull back" midfielders, specially Guarín, FC Porto has always been a team without depth attack, despite playing in a system of 4x3x3, with Hulk and Cristian Rodriguez in the wings, and Falcao helpless among Benfica's centrals.

The four-times national champions could only get the ball to forward by direct game of their mens on attack, an easy option for Benfica's defense to cancel, well placed, and concentrated in front to the ball.

Instead, Benfica reached his game easily to Porto's area, and started by pressing on the field's most advanced zones.
Benfica's right wing pushed the team forward and gave it depth and involvement, with Maxi and Ramires proving to be essential in addition to the action of Saviola, game's MVP.
The Argentine with a novel touch of ball and a game of intelligence as his movements were fundamental to Benfica to win the midfield battle.

In confrontation Guarín / Meireles with Javi Garcia / Carlos Martins, that was won by both "reds", Saviola was important to fill in the "core" and to receive the ball and open spaces to the middlefielders entrys from back to front.

In the second half Jesualdo did the only thing he could do: sacrifice contention average Guarín, launched Varela on right wing, Hulk switched to the left, and Rodriguez back to within midfielder.
This change allowed FC Porto finally to rise in block on the ground, reducing the spaces between the lines, pressing ahead, but Benfica was "over" instead of FC Porto, forced to "chasing" the result.

Benfica's defensive organization, well positioned, was always the time to hold the advantage of Saviola's goal, although Jesus felt the need to refresh the team with the entries of Luis Filipe to help to sustain FC Porto side openings, and Weldons, fresh and fit for the counter-attack against Porto's growing offensive.

Jesualdo made changes again, with Belluschi's and Farias' entries, but Benfica has always controlled the game and has earned the victory.
