Portugal fires Queiroz

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has sacked its national coach Carlos Queiroz without notice. This is the result of a special meeting of the FPF in Lisbon.
The reason is Queiroz's involvement in a doping affair. Association President Gilberto Madail, said the decision was "due to recent events had been taken".

Queiroz has been suspended for six months ten days ago, by the Portuguese Anti-Doping Agency (ADOP), therefore the thrown out of the 57-year-old coach, was regarded as expected for days.

In preparation for the World Cup in South Africa, Portugal coach during a training camp would have obstructed a doping control from ADOP, and would have used less inappropriate words for the inspectors.

In the first two games in the European Championship Qualification (4-4 against Cyprus, 0-1 in Norway), had assistant coach Agostinho Oliveira oversees the team.

A successor to Queiroz is not yet clear but in conversation, are the Portuguese Humberto Coelho and Paulo Bento, as well the Spaniard Luis Aragones, who led his country to the 2008' European title.

Already after the unsatisfactory performance of Portugal at the World Cup -Selecção failed in the fourth round to Spain - had been voiced criticism to Queiroz.

According to media reports, a termination of the contract would have cost the Portuguese Football Federation five million €, but due the 6 months suspension now the summary dismissal is possible.
